Attention parents of high school students! Today we’re looking at ways for your teen to retain more information when they’re is studying for quizzes, tests, and exams. Using these tips will help them to remember more in less time. As much as we all enjoy studying, who wouldn’t want to free up a little more time in their day?
It is absolutely essential that students are well-rested when writing exams and it’s also important to get sleep after studying so that knowledge can go into long-term memory during REM sleep. While sleep can be hard to come by when cramming for an exam, another challenge is being able to actually fall asleep in the first place!
The pre-exam jitters have gotten the best of all of us at one time or another. Luckily There are some things you can do to help your teen relax before an exam, like breathing exercises, yoga, and even meditation. And you can do it together. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!
Understand Your Teen's Learning Type
Everybody learns in different ways. For your teen to master their own brain, begin by understanding their learning type and focus study strategies around it. Some students retain information better by looking at it (visual learners), others by hearing it (auditory learners), and others still by actually writing it out (kinesthetic learners). Focus on what works best for them, but don’t forget to be open to new methods as you guide them on their journey to adulthood!
Use Flash Cards
No matter what student’s learning style, using flash cards can be a good way to find out what topics they understand and which ones need work. Not only are the cards useful as a study tool, but the act of making the flash cards alone is extremely helpful for retention. There are many other reasons to use flash cards too:
- They are versatile
- They are cheap
- They are portable
- They make learning easier
Study Alone and in Groups
Studying alone helps minimize distractions and studying in groups allows students to teach each other. Why not get the best of both worlds? This goes for most things in life, but mixing it up can help shift your frame of reference, giving your brain a fresh environment to absorb new ideas.
